me

am, have, and will be

secretly sequestering a silent jury

vital organs all with three parts

that make up the whole

of the first, the second, and the third

distinguishable only

by the luminescent color

eminating from all possible exits

would you like to be smoked

would you like to be smoked

would you consent to be food

for the ones that you love

while the world we know

that world erodes

and flesh becomes a stepping stone

when the sun is enough to feed your bones

when the moon is a river that floats you along

when the stars too are your friends

this is then the time

when things are brought to life

when life and love are one

dubword::GEIST is a time-based-art exhibition featuring local Ventura poets who have been reading and performing in the area throughout the past two decades. Steve Aguilar, filmmaker, has been documenting the activities of local writers and will be presenting ten short films based on works by ten of these artists. These ten artists, then, will perform in front of these ten films, creating a doppelganger effect, a sense of then and now, kind of retro, but better.

dubword::GEIST includes a space-set component, with monotypes by Gary Chafe and stone sculptures by Art City founder, Paul Lindhard. This exhibition hopes to highlight Ventura as California’s one and only Art City, with Art City being one of the seminal arts organizations in the Ventura area.

On the Curators:

Steve Aguilar is a filmmaker who has been collecting performance documentation of Ventura’s underground art scene for over twenty years. Someone to definitely keep track of and worship.

Sopha Kidd, a curator currently active in the southwest China’s contemporary art scene, particularly that of time-based-art, is visiting her hometown Ventura and is wildly excited to work with her compatriot homeys once again.

Gwendolyn Alley, curator, poet, and teacher is currently reading for her Ph.D at Pacifica Institute. She is the motivating influence of this exhibition, once again, as always, and thank Art for her.

Gwendolyn Alley’s Ventura College summer school 2012 writing students took a field trip to the Ventura River and Art City.

At the river, they learned about the Ventura River Parkway from Friends of the River and Sierra Club board member Jim Hines.

Then, because it was cold, loud, and windy at the river, we walked around the block to Art City where Paul and Russel et al made us feel at home. (Thanks!)

At Art City, Barbara Bain, an enrolled member of the Shasta tribe, discussed the issues of “blood quantum” and tribal lands with students. Students also checked out neighboring Patagonia headquarters and explored the grounds of Art City.

Thanks to an invitation from Paul Lindhard and support from Russel, students will return to Art City Tuesday July 31 at 6pm for an end of summer session celebration that will include a potluck, poetry, open mic, and music. Download the pdf here: ArtCity students

Kevin Carman is an inter-art Tasmanian devil, working across the USA from West Coast to East throughout the year, leaving a trail of works which include painting, stone sculpture, eco-art installation, performance art, and printed matter. Recent exhibitions have been I Need(2010) and Fly Fly Fly (2012) in Ventura, California at Sylvia White Gallery, as well an east coast exhibition of stone sculpture at the Coop gallery in Asheville, North Carolina. Also, Lettresauvage, in Santa Paula, CA is presently publishing Fly Fly Fly, by Kevin Carman, with linoleum blockprint illustrations by the artist.

New Location for Fluxus A Go-Go's Earth Night 2012

Greeting Fluxus Fans,

Due to the recent trouble at the last Art City show, the City of Ventura has shut down any events from happening at night at Art City, and in turn cancelled the original Earth Night 2012 celebration set for April 21st at Art City. Thank You Ventura ! Rather than have to cancel another Fluxus a Go-Go event, we decided to search for another location in Ventura where we could do some version of the original show we had planned.

Unfortunately, we had to scale down and feature only 4 bands instead of 6 bands, but if the show goes well, we may have a new location for monthly Fluxus a Go-Go shows and you will be able to see the missing bands at a future Fluxus event. We will still have an art show, video projection, and great music, so come early, have some dinner, have some drinks, and enjoy the new atmosphere of Fluxus a Go-Go.

YOLIES FRESH MEXICAN GRILL – 26 S. Garden Street in Ventura – on the corner of Garden and Main in Downtown Ventura – 2 blocks from Art City & the WAV. The folks at Yolies were kind enough to offer up a beautiful covered patio area for our unique event and saved Earth Night 2012 from extinction! Cover charge will still be $8.00 – There will be fine mexican food and a full bar – This will be a 21 and over event – no exceptions. We are still limited to around 100 people, so please, reserve your tickets in advance by emailing us at micdept@mac.com and your ticket will be waiting for you to purchase at the patio entrance. We are still honoring all ticket reservations that we already have, but if you decide you don’t want to attend because the event is not at Art City, please let us know so we can take you off the reservation list.

 Earth Night 2012

     Paul Lindhard maintains that the Patriot Peace Portal’s horizontal element inspired the piece. Because of it’s long wiggly shape, the portal was a difficult structure to stand. He found and chose the legs for the piece on a subsequent rock trip to the same Basalt quarry in WA state. By the time monies for the job were made available the legs were gone. Paul made another trip to find pieces to complete the composition and find a substitute for the legs that would create the ideal proportional relationship. At the quarry Paul found the perfect accent/support stones, while the legs to carry the 19′ horizontal stone had to be made taller. An experienced Bronze caster, Paul saw an opportunity to lengthen the legs by adding metal cradle/collars to secure the upper element to the legs that would carry it. Iron was determined to be the best choice because of its strength, and historical use.

      Paul met Jim Melnik in 1980 at a drawing class held in Paul’s studio at the Ambrose Lumber Yard in Goleta, CA. Paul built the studio out of  a 130 year old barn on the property, home to many a barn dance in its day. Jim is an extraordinary landscape designer who works primarily in Santa Barbara and Montecito, CA.
